In 1929, the 17th Duke of Alba, Jacobo Fitz-James, travelled to Mesopotamia, keen to learn more about the archaeological work uncovering the history of the ancient Near East. This trip was made possible thanks to the area's already well-established tourism activity, which can be linked to the British colonial presence.
This paper has two distinct but interrelated parts, which are too two research objectives. On the one hand, it analyzes the Duke's journey based on documentation found in the archives of the Liria Palace in Madrid and the services provided by a travel agency. On the other, it explores the relationships between the study of the ancient Near East, European colonialism in Western Asia, and the expansion of tourism with the continuing European political presence in the area and the countries that were on the verge of achieving political independence. The Duke's journey took place in a world undergoing profound change, and his interest in the past also showed an active awareness of the world in which he lived.
