Abstract

The Spanish tourism model is characterized by sustained quantitative growth and a significant contribution to GDP; however, it faces increasing social and academic contestation due to its socio-ecological externalities. This article presents acritical analysis of this model, going beyond conventional sustainability approaches to incorporate emerging theoretical frameworks. The methodologyconsisted of documentary and bibliographic review to assess thecurrent situation of tourism in Spain, taking into account the hegemonic tourism paradigm from five interconnected perspectives: ecological economics and degrowth, decolonial theory, feminist critique, platform capitalism, and regenerative tourism. The analysis reveals that phenomenasuch as labor precariousness, touristification, pressure on resources, and economic dependence are not dysfunctions, but structural characteristics of an extractivist model. It is concluded that any transition to a post-touristic or fairer model requires a profound deconstruction of it sunderlying logics and the adoption of brave public policies that prioriti zethewell-being of host communities and the integrity of ecosystem sover growth maximization.
