Abstract

Community-based tourism is a strategy for promoting sustainable development in rural areas. This study aimed to analyze perceptions of the sustainability of community-based tourism in three communities of Salinas de Guaranda parish (Ecuador), considering the perspectives of residents and entrepreneurs. Adapted and validated questionnaires were administered to 205 residents and 82 entrepreneurs. The evaluated dimensions included economic sustainability, sociocultural dynamics, environmental sustainability, business ecosystem, quality of life, and social environment. The results revealed predominantly favorable perceptions across most dimensions. Significant differences were identified between residents and entrepreneurs regarding economic sustainability, sociocultural dynamics, quality of life, and social environment. The business ecosystem received the least favorable evaluations in both groups. Correlation analyses suggested a relationship between quality of life, social environment, and business development. These findings provide evidence to strengthen sustainable community-based tourism strategies in rural contexts.
