Abstract

This study explores the level of knowledge and understanding that tour guides have in their professional activity regarding the concept of cultural heritage. It presents a comparative analysis of surveys conducted in 2002 and 2024 with tour guides working in Santa Cruz, southern Patagonia. The study considers the definition of Cultural Heritage, its ownership and care, knowledge of legal regulations, negative impacts on assets, among other variables. The main results indicate progress in the understanding of the concept, regulations, and their management. Additionally, the study assesses the relevance of analyzing and evaluating cultural ecosystem services as a tool for the conservation and management of local cultural assets, with tourism being one of them. Finally, it highlights the prominent role of tour guides as disseminators of the concept, as well as regional history and identity.
